The Animal Emergency and Referral Center provides veterinary specialist
services through referral by your regular veterinarian. These services include
internal medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, laser surgery, orthopedic surgery,
soft tissue surgery, radiology, ultrasound, and other advanced diagnostic imaging.
Radioiodine (Iodine131) therapy for feline hyperthyroidism is also performed here.
Our method of practice includes daily hospital rounds where doctors and technicians
gather to examine and discuss each hospitalized patient's problems, diagnostics,
and treatment plans. This format (involving input from multiple sources) enhances
the quality of patient care.

We have the ability to perform rapid biochemical and electrolyte determinations
in our laboratory. Special anesthetic techniques are available for high-risk patients.
We can monitor them with blood pressure determination, pulse oximetry and end
tidal CO2, along with electrocardiogram. Sophisticated color Doppler diagnostic
ultrasound, standard ultrasound, electrodiagnostic, evoked potential (for example,
hearing tests), video fluoroscopic, video endoscopic, video laparoscopic, video
thoracoscopic, and other special instrumentation is on hand for clinical use.
Advanced magnetic resonance imaging and CT scanning is available locally. Pacemaker
implantation using image intensified video fluoroscopy is performed at this hospital.

On an emergency basis neurologic, surgical, and internal medicine emergency
referrals may be admitted through the on-duty emergency clinician. Emergency admission
can be arranged day or night. The owners should call ahead for permission and
instructions. We ask that referral clients bring a short note from their veterinarian
with a summary of the diagnostic and therapeutic records. Clients should also
bring previous radiographs and other test results, and should bring ALL medications
they are currently giving (including heartworm prevention). It is more reliable
to bring these records at the time of examination (rather than faxing them).
